UK mobile network Vodafone has completed the first space-based video call using unmodified 4G and 5G smartphones over a satellite built to offer a full mobile broadband.
The service was tested via a partnership with US-based space cellular broadband network AST SpaceMobile. Direct-to-mobile services require partnerships between mobile operators and satellite companies.
The direct-to-mobile satellite service will extend Vodafone’s existing land-based fibre and mobile networks to provide digital connectivity in rural coverage ‘not spots.’
A year ago, US network operator T-Mobile and satellite firm Starlink successfully sent and received the first text messages between low earth orbit satellites and unmodified, standard smartphones.
