Ruling: Meta not a monopoly after Instagram, WhatsApp acquisitions

A Washington district court has ruled that the acquisitions of photo-sharing and messaging service apps Instagram and WhatsApp did not violate US antitrust laws.

The US trade regulator Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sued Meta in 2020, claiming the company had gained monopoly status in social media with the acquisitions.

Although Meta may have enjoyed monopoly power in the past, the court added that FTC failed to show “that it continues to hold such power now”.
