US FCC to start process of restoring countrywide net neutrality

US telecommunications regulator Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will be voting this month on Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel’s proposal to restore net neutrality across the country.

Net neutrality requires ISPs to treat all lawful Internet traffic equally, regardless of content, users, platforms, applications, or devices.

FCC had finally introduced federal net neutrality in the country in 2015, ten years after its initial announcement of the policy and a lengthy legal challenge that followed. But in 2017, following a change of administration, the same FCC repealed the rule, leaving it to each state to chose to adopt it or not. Since then, only a handful of states, including Silicon Valley’s home state California, have passed legislation mandating net neutrality.

In an address at The National Press Club last week, Ms Rosenworcel said she will put forward to fellow commissioners her proposal to restore net neutrality across the US as one of several efforts to make Internet access “fast, fair and open” for all citizens.

Last year, UK regulator Ofcom began consultations on a new approach to net neutrality following the country’s exit from the EU where the principle had been in force through open Internet regulation since 2015.

We continue to monitor these developments and will return here with further updates.
