EU sovereignty plans to restrict US tech giants’ access to members’ cloud procurement

Reports indicate the EU is preparing to reduce its reliance on US cloud providers by backing European alternatives in cloud computing.

Under plans currently in draft form, the regional bloc is considering strict non-price criteria ‌for tendering cloud computing services to member states in strategic areas that could exclude US tech giants. The criteria include requirements for software and hardware to be developed within the EU.

The plans are part of the EU Cloud and AI Development Act to be unveiled this week as a package of measures to reduce dependence on foreign tech providers and promote EU innovation.
