Apple to allow alternative app stores for Brazil developers

Apple has announced it will allow developers in Brazil to distribute iOS apps through alternative app stores.

The change follows an agreement with between Apple and the country’s competition regulator Conselho Administrativo de Defesa Econômica in December when the company settled a dispute opened in 2022. New options will allows developers to distribute apps on alternative app marketplaces and to process in-app payments for digital goods and services outside of Apple In-App Purchase.

The company warned the new options open new avenues for malware, fraud, scams, privacy and security risks, and that apps downloaded outside the App Store will not benefit from the same protections Apple provides through its App Review process.

However, third-party hosted iOS apps will still be subject to the company’s Notarization process, the less comprehensive protection that applies to all apps on the App Store.

We continue to monitor these developments and will return here with further updates.
