In July 2024, the European Commission had accused the platform of breaching its online content rules, with improperly “verified” blue tick accounts deceiving users.
“This deception exposes users to scams, including impersonation frauds, as well as other forms of manipulation by malicious actors,” the Commission said.
“The fine issued today was calculated taking into account the nature of these infringements, their gravity in terms of affected EU users, and their duration,” it added.
The US government and telecom regulator Federal Communications Commission have criticised the EU for this sanction, accusing it of targeting US companies.
